San Juan EDC members on March 4 approved sponsorships for school and community events, including a gold sponsorship for the PSJA All Abilities Awareness Walk and a silver sponsorship for a superintendent scholarship golf tournament.
The nut graf: the board voted to fund community events that raise scholarship funds and support local nonprofits; several event organizers presented sponsorship proposals for May and April festivals but no board votes were recorded on those presentations.
During the meeting a PSJA Special Education social worker, Daisy Sunita, requested a gold-level sponsorship for the PSJA All Abilities Awareness Walk scheduled for April 26 at PSJA Stadium. "All monies, raised through this event go for scholarships for students that are serviced through the special education department that are seeking higher education," Sunita said. She told the board the event runs 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., is free to the community and typically includes more than 30 agency resource tables.
After discussion a board member moved to sponsor the walk at the gold level; the motion was seconded and the board voted in favor. "All those in favor? Aye. Okay. Motion passes unanimously," the chair said. The meeting transcript does not specify the dollar value of the gold sponsorship.
Ray Perez, identified as PSJA ISD staff and a history teacher, presented a request for the superintendent inaugural scholarship golf tournament scheduled for March 29. Perez described the tournament as a Tri-City collaboration to connect the business community with students and to raise scholarship funds. "The proceeds are basically for students, to finance their education," Perez said. A board member moved to approve a silver sponsorship for the tournament; after a second the motion carried.
The board also heard presentations but did not record votes on two festival sponsorship requests: a second annual Armed Forces Festival slated for May 16–17 and the South Texas Mariachi Festival presented for late April. An event representative for the Armed Forces Festival described a two-day program with live music, car shows and nonprofit partners; the Mariachi festival presenters outlined sponsorship tiers and event programming but did not request immediate board action during the meeting.
Votes at a glance: - PSJA All Abilities Awareness Walk (April 26, PSJA Stadium): motion to provide Gold sponsorship — approved (motion seconded; board recorded unanimous "Aye"); dollar amount not specified in transcript. - Superintendent inaugural scholarship golf tournament (March 29): motion to provide Silver sponsorship — approved (motion seconded; vote recorded in favor); dollar amount not specified in transcript.
Board members noted the need to coordinate scholarship recipients with existing foundation scholarships to avoid duplication and to confirm logo placement on event shirts and materials. For the PSJA walk an organizer said the EDC logo would appear on the back of the event shirt alongside partner city logos.
The board moved to an executive-session item after sponsorship business.
