Planning manager: code amendments are under way to align design standards with state statute

Harriman said a downtown department‑structure project will return to the commission after design changes were made following the discovery of an easement on the property. He said Covenant Shores will also return for design review and that staff are actively working on numerous code amendments.
Harriman said the state legislature required changes to the design-commission statutes that limit subjective standards, which will require the municipal code to be revised so standards are objective where the state statute mandates. He said staff are busy implementing those changes and that the city recently hired a new planner who will be introduced at a future meeting.
Harriman closed by thanking commissioners for meeting in person and noting the workload on code amendments and future agenda items. No formal action was taken; the update was informational.
