Board debates travel to national conferences; NAFIS prioritized over distant MISA meeting

During the announcements, a board member described NAFIS — scheduled in March in Washington, D.C. — as a “hard tough trip” that the district uses to lobby Congress for additional funds. “I feel strongly that other members do need to go to that because that is the meeting that we lobby for additional funds,” the speaker said. By contrast, the Military Impacted Schools Association (MISA) conference will be held in Hawaii this year; some members said they did not see the need for the whole board to travel there.
Board members asked staff to return a calendar of conference dates and to identify who plans to attend. Several members raised cost as a factor and said past practice limited long-distance travel to one or two attendees. They requested that staff confirm registration deadlines so the board can approve travel as needed.
No formal motion or vote on travel authorization was recorded during the Feb. 19 meeting; members said they expect decisions and formal approvals to appear on future agendas once dates and participant lists are finalized.
