Gig Harbor council unanimously approves consent agenda; city announces new communications manager

Gig Harbor — The Gig Harbor City Council unanimously approved the consent agenda at its Monday, Feb. 24 meeting and heard a staffing announcement from the city administrator that a new communications manager will start in April.
Council Member Wouk moved to approve the consent agenda and Council Member Henderson seconded; Mayor Barber and all council members present voted yes, and the motion passed unanimously, the council recorded. Assistant City Clerk Tiffany Alemit performed the roll call at the start of the meeting.
City Administrator (name not specified) told the council, “We have successfully hired a communications manager. Laurie Maricle … she will be starting with us Monday, April 7.” The administrator said Maricle is currently director of team communication for the Washington Grain Commission, has been with that organization for almost four years, previously worked about two and a half years for the Association of Washington Business, and earlier served as marketing and public relations coordinator at Washington State University’s College of Pharmacy.
Mayor Barber used his report to summarize items discussed at the Association of Washington Cities Action Days in Olympia, where he and Council Member Stone met with other municipal officials and state legislators. Barber said the Legislature considered more than 2,000 bills and that the state faces a large, unspecified revenue shortfall that is affecting budget options for cities. He also noted the Washington Attorney General’s office has filed multiple lawsuits against the federal administration, as reported in the meeting.
Council Member Coronado reported on recent onboarding and outreach since joining the council, and said she has accepted an invitation to participate in the Pierce County Coalition Against Domestic Violence to coordinate local efforts. The council had no public comments on non-agenda items during the meeting, and Mayor Barber closed the session after council reports.
