Commission receives updated Mass Central rail‑trail signage designs; second review expected in spring

Members of the Sudbury Historical Commission reported on a recent meeting with Amber from the Department of Conservation and Recreation and other stakeholders to review proposed signage slides for the Mass Central Rail Trail through Sudbury and Hudson.

The group reviewed six signage slides (four in Sudbury, two in Hudson) that largely build on earlier designs and proposed minor content and layout changes. Commissioners said they supplied written feedback in advance to speed the meeting and identified some constraints tied to existing memoranda of understanding and the established layout conventions for the slide format, including map placement. The group discussed Bridge 127, Bridge 128 near Hot Brook, the South Sudbury Section House, the Tool House and the South Sudbury Diamond Crossing as locations tied to the Sudbury slides; Hudson’s slides included Ordway Station and a bridge design similar to Sudbury’s Bridge 128.

Commissioners noted the project is well advanced — one member described the current review as “round 5” rather than an initial draft — and asked DCR to consolidate input into a round‑two package. Amber (DCR) is expected to present the consolidated slides at a future commission meeting; commissioners anticipate that set will come to the commission in March or, more likely, April for further public discussion. The commission also raised the question of placement for granite blocks taken from Bridge 128 and discussed whether those blocks could be used as informal seating near the trail.

No formal vote was taken; commissioners agreed to await the consolidated slides and to invite DCR staff to the next review meeting so the commission can respond with final comments for the project team.
