Shipyard leadership reports limited immediate workforce impact from early-out offers; installation and shipyard commands separated

Staff said employees who accepted the early-out will be removed from the yard’s rolls at month’s end but will continue to receive full government pay through the end of the federal fiscal year on Sept. 30. Shipyard management is working to preserve billets where possible because the number of billets affects the yard’s capacity and pace of work; staff described ongoing discussions with Navy leadership about retaining billets despite early-out departures.
The update also noted a separate Department of Defense directive affecting additional DOD employees and a related focus on probationary billets; shipyard leadership identified 36 probationary billets potentially subject to action but said the full impact was still uncertain.
Finally, staff said the Navy has executed a long-discussed separation between the shipyard’s operational commander and the installation (landlord) commander. The installation commanding officer is Capt. Greg Benton; staff said Benton is set to retire this summer and the installation command is expected to continue under a civil engineer corps officer after his retirement.
