Portsmouth names Leo Akuchilobi workforce development manager; assistant director to join next week

Portsmouth Economic Development introduced Leo Akuchilobi as the new manager of workforce development. Staff said Akuchilobi joined the office on Feb. 3 and will focus on training programs, business outreach and linking residents to employment opportunities. In his remarks Akuchilobi described prior work in corrections as a community engagement business developer for the Virginia Department of Justice and said he intends to emphasize preventive, community-based workforce strategies and stronger employer partnerships.
Staff also announced that Charlie Baumann will join Portsmouth Economic Development as assistant director next Monday; Baumann is coming most recently from the City of Virginia Beach. Staff said the department is near full staffing following these hires.
Ending: Akuchilobi invited commissioners or residents to contact him directly about workforce needs and training opportunities; staff said they will introduce Baumann at a future meeting when he joins the office.
