The Chehalis City Council on Feb. 24 unanimously adopted the airport master plan update completed in late 2024, formalizing the city’s role as airport sponsor and aligning the airport layout plans with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approvals.
Brandon, a city staff member responsible for airport matters, introduced the item and invited Leah Whitfield of the aviation planning group to summarize the study. "The airport master plan was completed in late 2024," said Whitfield, and the FAA completed its final checks in August 2024. She told council the plan provides an aviation activity forecast and a preferred development program and that the FAA-signed airport layout plan set is necessary for the city to pursue identified capital projects.
Whitfield and staff said the airport master plan sets a 20-year vision (with an emphasis on the next five to ten years) and that adoption by council is required so projects identified in the layout can proceed and be eligible for FAA funding, including entitlement and discretionary grant programs. Staff noted the city has recently secured related grants, including an industrial site readiness grant and a USDOT Build America Bureau grant that support early-stage development tied to the master plan.
Council asked about the plan’s date label (2024 versus 2025); staff explained that the FAA sign-off and final chapters were completed in 2024, and adoption reflects that timeline. The council approved the adoption on a voice vote.
