Parents urge board to improve transparency after alleged staff‑student misconduct; call for cameras and clearer follow‑up

Parent commenters told the board they have encountered alleged inappropriate conduct by staff and that reporting to administrators sometimes produced no action, leaving families feeling vulnerable.

Sheila Torres, speaking as a parent, described alleged incidents involving a wrestling coach at Fleming Island High School and said the coach admitted to conduct that took place after the participant turned 18 but had previously been a student in his program. Torres said she has observed patterns where parents’ complaints were dismissed as students “horsing around” and where student advocates were retaliated against.

Torres asked the board to increase transparency in investigations and suggested installing cameras in classrooms and practice areas so parents and investigators could see objective evidence. "If the teacher has nothing to hide and they're doing everything per regulation, there shouldn't be a fuss about it," Torres said, adding that the district must do more to prevent harm and to support parents who report concerns.

Dr. Shonda Hoseley, a community member and returning resident, also raised transportation reliability but told the board she was primarily concerned about student safety and asked what the district is doing to investigate and prevent inappropriate conduct. The board took public comment but did not announce new investigative procedures at the meeting.

The board did not take immediate action; parents said they will continue to press for clearer reporting processes, more transparent follow‑up and consideration of camera deployment in settings where adult‑student interactions occur.
