Council forms legislative committee to coordinate state lobbying; membership named
Summary
City Council approved creation of a legislative committee to coordinate city lobbying and prioritize state-level requests. Council approved the committee and authorized councilors to testify consistent with the Association of Washington Cities hot sheet.
The Centralia City Council approved a standing legislative committee on Feb. 11 to coordinate state-level lobbying and to prioritize and present legislative recommendations to the council.
Staff described the committee’s purpose as steering legislative policy for staff and the Economic Alliance of Lewis County, establishing and prioritizing legislative priorities, drafting resolutions and recommendations for council consideration, and aligning city needs with Association of Washington Cities guidance. The committee is expected to meet every other week during the legislative session.
Councilors Norm Chapman, Adriana Garabay and Mark Wesley were named as committee members; Deputy Mayor Chris Brewer will serve as the alternate. City staff members assigned are Finance Director Brett Brodersen, M. L. Norton and City Manager Mike Thomas, with Amy Buckler named as the staff alternate. The council voted to authorize committee members to follow AWC’s “hot sheet” and testify on behalf of the city where the committee recommends it.
The motion to establish the committee and to allow testimony aligned with AWC recommendations passed on a 6–0 voice vote with no recorded opposing votes.
(Ending) Staff said the Economic Alliance will set the committee’s first meeting date and staff will notify the named councilors and staff of that schedule.
