BOCC authorizes county-initiated zoning for parcel de-annexed from Kiowa

The Elbert County Board of County Commissioners authorized planning staff to begin a county-initiated zoning process for a parcel south of Kiowa that was recently de-annexed and therefore has no county zoning designation.
Jennifer Jones, Elbert County planning manager, briefed the board that because zoning does not automatically transfer from one jurisdiction to another, the county must initiate a zoning process under Elbert County zoning regulations to assign an appropriate county zone. Jones recommended assigning agricultural zoning to the property and asked for direction or authorization from the board to proceed.
A motion to authorize planning staff to begin the process passed by voice vote; the board recorded all votes in the affirmative. Staff will proceed with notice, referral and public-review steps required by county regulations to complete the zoning action.
