Council accepts donated paving for Wheeler Field spectator area from local partners

Centralia’s City Council on Feb. 25 accepted a donation to pave a 1,600‑square‑foot spectator area at Wheeler Field in Borst Park.
Deputy City Manager and Parks Director Amy Buckler presented the proposal and said three local partners agreed to cover labor and materials: Lakeside Industries will grade and pave the area at cost; the Centralia Athletics and Activities Facilities Foundation (CAF) committed $2,000 toward materials; and the Wheeler Field Improvement Committee, led by Kim Ashmore, agreed to fund the remaining balance of roughly $10,700.
Buckler said the paved area will reduce mud tracked onto newly installed turf and provide a cleaner spectator area. "We have 3 partners who have stepped up to pave this area for us, at no cost to the city," Buckler said.
Council members asked about future seating and accessibility. Parks staff said ongoing grandstand and seating grants will address major seating upgrades and that staff will explore adding seating options in the new paved area. Several councilors praised the volunteers and fundraisers who support park improvements.
A motion to accept the donation carried by unanimous voice vote.
