Burien council sets interview slate for advisory bodies, chooses top candidates for planning seat

Burien, Wash. — The Burien City Council on Feb. 24 determined which applicants will be interviewed for multiple advisory bodies and clarified the interview process ahead of a special March 3 meeting.
Context: staff reported the city had received 21 applications to fill 13 advisory-body openings; the council reviewed applicant counts and directed which candidates should be brought in for interviews.
What the council decided
- Human services and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts advisory boards: because there were three applicants for each of those boards, council directed that all three applicants be interviewed (no objections).
- Airport Committee: council directed that all four applicants be invited to interview; council noted the committee composition had been changed recently and that the board now has additional seats.
- Business & Economic Development (EDP) and Planning Commission: for the EDP (five seats available, six applicants), council agreed to interview all applicants. For the Planning Commission (one seat), the council used a “top‑3” vote method: councilmembers cast three votes each; the three top vote-getters to advance to interviews were Hayden Campbell, Mia Vargas and Bob Grawetz.
Why it matters: advisory bodies advise staff and the council on land use, economic development, parks and human services. The interview outcomes determine which candidates will proceed to appointment consideration.
Procedures and next steps: staff said it had provided an Excel spreadsheet of applicants to council on Feb. 21. Council asked staff to publish the interview list and bring the named candidates in for interviews at the March 3 special meeting. Council also asked that interview questions be circulated to councilmembers for comment; staff agreed to accept any suggested edits and finalize the interview questions for the meeting.
Ending: Staff will contact the applicants selected for interviews and prepare interview materials; councilmembers plan to convene on March 3 for candidate interviews.
