Sudbury library trustees review renovation drawings, programming, farmer's-market plans and a trustee’s departure

At a March 4 meeting of the Town of Sudbury Library Trustees, the library director reported that renovation drawings for the library’s history room have been submitted to legal and facilities, that balcony rails in the original building will be raised to meet code, and that the library received a $10,000 donation for e-book purchases.

“This is just the first phase,” the director said of the history-room drawings, describing proposed shelving and cabinetry changes and plans to wall off part of the room to create archival storage and a small kitchenette. The drawings have gone to legal for edits before facilities posts them, the director said.

Trustees were told the interior balcony railing in the library’s original section is not at code height; architects will raise the railing by adding a footing at the base so the original material is preserved while meeting safety standards, the director said.

Other operational updates included additions to the library’s Library of Things — a heat gun, air compressor and other items — and new adaptive-collection items such as a wheeled walker and a laptop. The director said staff are hiring an additional reference librarian and that the library will use community-preservation funds tied to the renovation project before the end of the fiscal year.

On community programming, the director described plans for a May community read and a large May celebration called “Good Now Galaxy,” with costume rentals, terrarium programming and potential food trucks. The Thursday Garden Club is discussing donated raised beds and a mural or mosaic on library grounds to support farmer’s-market programming.

Trustees discussed a proposed coupon system for the farmers market to support SNAP and WIC recipients. The director reported conversations with other towns and proposed reimbursing merchants immediately after the market when merchants submit coupon receipts; trustees were told some state-level benefit reductions have reduced farmers’ markets’ customer purchasing power and that the town is exploring immediate reimbursement to vendors.

On facilities and amenities, staff reported the new cement pad and a properly anchored bike rack have been installed, interior painting was completed, and the library was told it will receive three bottle-filler water stations though timing is not yet confirmed. The EV charger project is “slowly creeping forward,” the director said.

The director also said the library received $10,000 for e-book purchasing and that donors will share a donor report later in the month. The director outlined planned April and May programming — including authors and a community read — and a virtual discussion series involving about 30 libraries.

Near the end of the meeting the chair announced the current session was their last meeting because they accepted a new job in Andover and will step down at the end of March. No replacement was selected at the meeting.
