Committee approves first amendment to Bishop Connolly lease to secure additional pre‑K classrooms

The Facilities Operations Subcommittee approved a first amendment to the lease between the city and the Roman Catholic Diocese to secure additional classroom space at Bishop Connolly for public preschool and extended school-year (ESY) services.
Staff told the committee the amendment would add roughly 14 months of temporary classroom space at the Connolly site, allowing the district to consolidate preschool classrooms and run ESY there over the summer without relocating programs. The amendment will add capacity equivalent to six additional classrooms at Connolly and enable the district to bring preschool classrooms formerly located at 300 Northeast Avenue into the Connolly footprint for the coming year.
Staff said the Diocese agreed to allow temporary, non‑permanent partitions and that the parish would permit the district to perform needed electrical and minor modifications so rooms meet program needs. The district will remain responsible for agreed lease costs, including snow removal and the additional months of occupancy noted in the amendment.
Committee members asked for and received a commitment that staff will provide a cost analysis illustrating net savings or costs compared with alternative sites. Roll call votes recorded approval of the lease amendment.
Staff said the change will increase capacity at the Connolly site to 13 preschool classrooms next year and allow the district to add approximately 24 more preschool seats by increasing existing room occupancy.
