Elliott School playground and field design seeks $69,960 from CPC to address drainage and accessibility

Park and Recreation and the Department of Public Works presented a $69,960 design request March 5 to study and plan renovation of the Elliott School grounds, including the playground, fields, basketball court and perimeter walkways.
Presenters said Elliott serves about 450 students and surrounding community users, and that the outdoor space shows wear: poorly draining substrate has degraded turf and caused playground wood-fiber surfacing to migrate onto playing fields. The design scope includes subsurface drainage recommendations, accessible playground surfacing, perimeter walkways to improve circulation and gates to prevent vehicle access from adjoining streets.
DPW and Park & Rec said the project has been on the athletic-facilities capital plan for several years, that the design will include neighborhood outreach and stakeholder working groups (school department, families, summer programs), and that they plan to return to the CPC in fall 2025 with construction funding requests. The presenters said summer construction windows are important because work must occur when school is out.
The CPC noted that if the committee funds the current slate of applications in full, the CPC may still face a small funding shortfall across requests and will need to prioritize at its March deliberations. The CPC reiterated schedule: public hearing March 12 and CPC appropriation votes March 19.
