The Oklahoma City Historic Preservation Commission voted to recommend the Perrin Building, at 119 North Robinson Avenue, as eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Staff said the building is significant under National Register criterion C as an excellent example of commercial-style simplified Art Deco design by local architects Hawk and Parr, and under criterion A for its role in local civil-rights-era demonstrations. Staff noted the Perrin Building housed the Ann Maud Cafeteria, a site of civil-rights sit-ins in the late 1950s and 1960s; the nomination packet cited the cafeteria’s long operation and the building’s downtown commercial history.
The commission read a resolution recommending the Perrin Building to the mayor and City Council, the State Historic Preservation Review Committee and the State Historic Preservation Officer. The nomination packet was prepared by Isaac Heinz, AIA, of Tradesman Architectural Studios; the resolution commended his documentation. Mike Mays, National Register coordinator for the State Historic Preservation Office, attended the hearing and staff answered commissioners’ questions.
Commissioners moved, seconded and voted to recommend the nomination; the motion carried and the nomination will proceed to City Council and state review.
