Texas House issues a string of recognitions and honorary resolutions, celebrates International Women's Day and county delegations

The Texas House on March 6 adopted numerous ceremonial resolutions and recognized visiting delegations and honorees, including commemorations for Jim Wells County Day, Sullivan City Day, Somerset Day, Galveston County Day, International Women's Day and several local delegations and nonprofit anniversaries.
Members repeatedly moved to suspend House rules so the chamber could immediately consider and adopt these resolutions. Representative Lozano explained HR 63 recognizing March 6 as Jim Wells County Day at the Capitol; Representative Guillen explained HR 287 recognizing Sullivan City Day; Representative Luhan explained HR 438 recognizing Somerset Day; and Representative Leo Wilson explained HR 108 designating March 6 as Galveston County Day. Each resolution was adopted without recorded opposition after suspension of the rules.
House members also used the floor to offer brief tributes and recognitions. Representative Dutton asked colleagues to honor the life of Isaac T. Bryant, an educator and attorney from Houston, and the body observed a moment of silence. Representative Morales introduced members of the Chicano Squad and noted their work in Houston in the late 1970s; "Their efforts led to an astounding 91% clearance rate in their first year alone," Morales said. Representative Luhan and others recognized Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas on its 30th anniversary and highlighted its community reinvestment work.
Representative Harris Davila, Representative Fairley, Representative Ordaz and others spoke from the floor in observance of International Women's Day; the House adopted HR 452 recognizing March 8 as International Women's Day and the chamber invited women to the dais for the recognition. Representative Fairley said, "As the youngest member in the Texas House, I am so proud to represent a generation that has more opportunity and freedom than ever before." Representative Ordaz emphasized childcare's effect on workforce participation.
Procedural motions related to several resolutions were also recorded: members moved that comments be reduced to writing and placed in the House journal; motions were made and carried to add all members' names to some resolutions; and multiple resolutions were placed on the congratulatory and memorial calendars and adopted by voice vote.
