The Fredericksburg Architectural Review Board continued consideration of a certificate-of-appropriateness for a wood picket fence at 1106 Princess Anne Street after members asked the applicant to provide construction details for proposed gates.
The board continued the hearing so staff and the board can review drawings showing gate configuration, hardware and means to prevent sagging. The applicant, Victoria Willis, said the new fence would “match” an existing painted wood picket and would enclose the front and a portion of the north side of the property to secure pets and grandchildren.
The board’s concern centered on gate widths and operation. Karen Irvin, an ARB member, asked specifically about the number and size of gates and warned that large two-leaf gates “have to make extra provisions to make sure you don't end up with sagging,” and asked the applicant to return with details from the builder or installer. Irvin said she was “holding it up” only because the board needs clarity on how the gates will function and be supported.
Willis told the board the front gate would align with the brick walkway leading to the front door and the driveway gate would span the driveway and “stay open most of the time unless we had the children or the dogs there.” Board members also requested that the fence present the finished (ornamental) side to the street; Willis said the exterior would be finished and that she would provide updated drawings by email.
After discussion, a member moved to continue the application to the next meeting pending submission of gate drawings and construction details; another member seconded the motion and the board voted to continue the item. No vote tally was recorded in the public transcript.
The board instructed staff to accept the applicant's updated drawings before the next scheduled ARB meeting so the panel can review gate design, hardware details and plans to prevent sagging.
