Police accountability commissioners report modest turnout at outreach event; advocates urge broader social-media push

Commissioners recapped a recent public outreach event—"Who You're Gonna Call"—that connected residents with alternative public-safety services. The Davis Police Accountability Commission on Monday reviewed its February outreach event, "Who You're Gonna Call," and commissioners said the presentations connected residents to non-police public-safety services but that public turnout was lower than hoped.
Subcommittee members who organized the event said about a dozen community members attended and representatives from several agencies brought materials and answered questions. Commissioner Sherman called the conversation "very good" and said attendees asked tough questions about homelessness and non-police response options. Commissioner Griswold said presenters followed up afterward and expressed appreciation for the invitation.
Commissioners recommended earlier and more targeted outreach for future events, including using social media and recruiting younger volunteers to amplify promotion on platforms where local audiences are active. One commissioner suggested soliciting audience input 30 days before events to help shape topics that would draw broader community participation.
Several commissioners also said the event revealed community demand for a concise, public-facing resource (a one-sheet or refrigerator magnet) listing available non-police response options and contact points for people who want alternatives to calling 911.
No formal actions were taken; commissioners asked staff to consider more targeted promotion and to include next steps in the commission's long-range calendar.
