Residents press West Covina for dedicated pickleball courts; city points to park master plan

Several West Covina residents used the public-comment period March 4 to press the City Council for permanent, well-lit outdoor pickleball courts.
Jamie Zuleger, who said she was born and raised in West Covina, told the council: "We're asking for our fine city to provide our residents with permanent designated well lit outdoor pickleball courts." USA Pickleball ambassador (Western Region) speaker emphasized that the national governing body can provide free technical resources covering court construction, lighting and striping.
Players said existing facilities are oversubscribed: participants described up to 40 players competing for three courts at times and noted that neighboring cities have converted or built dedicated courts. Resident Tony Liu said pickleball gave him renewed fitness and social connections and asked the council to consider permanent facilities.
City Manager Paulina Morales responded that the city already provides striped pickleball lines at Del Norte Park and that a senior-center league uses Cortez Park. Morales said the city is launching a park master plan and will hold community meetings in early April; she invited the pickleball community to participate and provide site suggestions such as Del Norte Park and land near the Cameron Community Center.
Next steps: pickleball advocates were told to provide input during the park master-plan outreach; the council did not take action on funding or siting at the March 4 meeting.
