Sunbury reports Tree City USA growth award, Eagle Scout projects and five burials at Memorial Park

Miss Verziano told the committee the city's Tree City USA and the 2024 Growth Award applications were approved by the Arbor Day Foundation. She explained the growth award is based on points accrued across multiple categories (tree planting, certified arborist work, park projects), said the city scored roughly 23 points last year, and noted the city has applied for the growth award in prior years (2009 and 2011 were mentioned).
Miss Verziano also said she and Amber had met with an Eagle Scout who plans small projects at Evening Street Park such as hammock posts or wooden benches; the project is in early idea phases. She said the parks staff will continue to coordinate with the scout and report back as plans firm up.
On cemetery activity, staff reported five burials at Sunbury Memorial Park in the past month. Staff said they are improving how they track projects and awards throughout the year to avoid last-minute compilation of growth-award materials.
