Highway crews report staffing, equipment and traffic-count updates; sign theft and tree cleanup noted

“Some really good reports from all of our people like the Keele place got fixed and in good condition,” Miss Carolyn said, noting multiple successful repairs and cleanup jobs.
What staff told the meeting: Jojo (highway office staff) said staff have been addressing beaver activity on Vernon Witton and that crews conducted traffic counts. Jojo reported a 24-hour car count at the bridge on Old Airport Road of 610 vehicles, and a count at an address on Old Airport Road (noted as 2470 Old Airport) of 439 vehicles in 24 hours. Jojo also said counts on Ralph Broderick showed growth: 1,306 vehicles in an earlier 24-hour period and 1,960 in a later count, an increase of 654 cars.
Staffing and equipment: Ben and other staff said the county is operating three mowing crews this season and that the fleet has been upgraded. Ben said the county “finally got our dump truck” they had been waiting on for “2 or 3 years” and described multiple newer trucks in service. Ben said one mower deck is still pending arrival but that overall “we got enough mowers to run 3 crews.”
Sign theft and replacement: Miss Carolyn said residents reported missing signs and that staff planned to reinstall signs on 01/27 and to use tamper-proof fasteners where possible. She said, “I called Benton. He says, hey. The guy that does that is standing right here in front of me right now. Let me see if I can get that taken care of.”
Storm response and potholes: Staff reported tree removal after a recent storm (roughly a dozen trees removed overnight in one report) and said the cold snap and subsequent thaw produced a rise in potholes. Ben said crews patched numerous holes and that the department has been busy clearing downed branches.
Votes and procedural items: The board approved the meeting agenda (motion by Harless; second by Jeff) and approved last month’s meeting minutes (motion by Arliss; second by Jeff); both motions passed by voice vote with no named dissents. Jeff moved to adjourn, and Arliss seconded; the motion carried.
Ending: Staff said they will continue routine road maintenance, monitor traffic growth on local routes, and return to the next scheduled highway meeting (set for April 2 at 3:00 p.m.).
