Teachers and residents urge board to address retention, accountability and instructional quality

Two speakers during the public comment period on March 5 urged the Savannah‑Chatham County Board of Public Education to address teacher retention and district performance.
Raymond Watson, who identified himself as an educator working in Savannah, spoke for three minutes and described an environment of fear among teachers. Watson said teachers feel ignored by district leadership, that retention problems are not solely due to pay and that teachers are discouraged from speaking up about classroom and policy issues. He urged community support and said teachers plan to mobilize publicly to press for better working conditions.
Later in the public comment period, Rick Roni, who identified himself as a private citizen attending board meetings for two years, said the board had done well hiring Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts but faulted the board for tolerating what he described as mediocrity among some district staff. Roni cited district proficiency metrics for third graders across 13 elementary schools and urged the board to replace underperforming staff and build a culture of excellence.
Board members did not take action in response to the comments during the public comment period. The remarks were entered into the record; speakers asked the board to consider teacher‑facing policy and staffing decisions in future deliberations.
