District reports favorable roof bids, upcoming events and classroom resource displays

Staff reported that roof bids came in under budget with a recommendation for Malcor to receive the bid; community affairs previewed family engagement events and teaching-and-learning staff placed secondary resource samples on display through the next board meeting.
At the Feb. 3 meeting staff reported several operational updates: roof bids for Freeman and portions of West High came in lower than budget and staff recommended awarding the base bid plus an alternate to Malcor; community affairs highlighted upcoming family engagement events and a large college/career fair; and secondary resource adoption samples were placed on display for board review.
Associate Superintendent Dr. Angie Smith told the board that roof bids came in better than budget and that, even taking the alternate into account, the recommended award to Malcor would be roughly $200,000 under the budgeted amount for the project. The scope discussed included work at Freeman and an additional section of West High.
Community Affairs Director Anna Gonzales summarized upcoming events: elementary-level “celebration of learning” events across schools in the next four weeks, middle- and high-school parent-teacher conferences using the PowerPTC platform, a college-career-wellness fair at West High on Feb. 28 involving 244 external organizations, and a Black History Month celebration at Jefferson Middle School on Feb. 26. Gonzales encouraged families to look for registration links in the district newsletter.
Liz Wendell, executive director of teaching and learning, said secondary resource samples (including some world-language print samples) are available for board members to review upstairs and will remain on display through the next board meeting.
No formal bids were awarded on the record at this meeting; staff said they will recommend awards consistent with the lower bids and district procurement procedures.
