Senate unanimously approves stiffer penalties for late or incomplete campaign finance filings

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Senate on March 5 approved Senate Bill 483 on third reading by a unanimous 34–0 vote. The bill amends state code governing penalties for failure to file campaign finance reports or for filing incomplete or inaccurate reports.
Under the change described on the floor, if a political committee fails to file a required report or files an incomplete or inaccurate report, no penalty will be assessed if the missing or corrected filing is submitted within seven days of notice. The Secretary of State retains discretion to grant relief for good cause shown in order to enforce existing law.
