During the Feb. 4 meeting, the Town of Middleborough superintendent delivered an extended operations report describing equipment maintenance, field renovations and upgrades to park lighting and safety systems.
The superintendent (speaker 3) said the department has a new aerator on the way (funded via prior trustees’ action) and listed multiple vehicle and equipment repairs under way, including hydraulic leaks and belt replacements. He said crews will aerate and overseed fields in April, subject to weather, and will use donated clay from Little League and a past donor, Keith Braga of Massachusetts Maritime, to improve an underperforming town baseball field.
The superintendent described upgrades at multiple sites: new lighting at the Wood Street site and skate-park area, new handicap-accessible handles on building doors, an inventory and planned replacement of damaged bleacher planks, and plans for benches, dugouts, batting cages and nets at Wood Street. He said community preservation funds (about $275,000 from the CPC) are allocated to finish parts of the Wood Street project.
He also reported the town recently acquired a lightning-detection system to warn pool and field users during storms and discussed a proposal to repair or replace the pool liner; the superintendent said the town manager has authorized emergency funding to explore a fiberglass liner as a short-term fix. He reported a $10,000 donation from a group associated with former coach Patrick Bridal toward a playground project at the Wood Street site.
The superintendent emphasized coordination with volunteer groups and leagues, noting Little League renovated two fields and provided material that the parks department will reallocate. He said staff will seek estimates for dugouts, gates to prevent vehicles from accessing running tracks, and other site-specific work and will return with bid documents and cost estimates before committing capital funds.
No final construction contracts or budget amendments were approved at the meeting; the superintendent’s report was informational and directed staff to proceed with planning, ordering equipment and preparing estimates.
