West Allis alderman pushes for bicycle-pedestrian advisory committee; WISDOT open houses scheduled for I-94 reconstruction

Alderman Weigel told the West Allis Common Council that recent community conversations have highlighted bicycle and pedestrian safety and that he will pursue a bicycle-pedestrian advisory committee to advise the city's capital improvement committee.
"I believe we have the structure within the city government to create a bicycle pedestrian advisory committee," Weigel said, adding the panel would be advisory and provide resident input on sidewalks, bike paths, bump-outs and other safety measures.
Weigel described a recent public conversation at Cagle's Inn, hosted by proprietor Julian Cagle, that drew roughly two dozen citizens and city staff and focused on transportation and quality-of-life issues. He said the advisory committee would give residents a formal channel to influence capital-improvement priorities.
Separately, Weigel announced two Wisconsin Department of Transportation open houses about reconstruction of Interstate 94 between 70th and 16th streets. He said one meeting will be Tuesday the 18th at the Tommy Thompson Center on the State Fairgrounds (northwest corner of the fairgrounds) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a second meeting will be Wednesday the 19th at Marquette University (3401 W. Wisconsin Ave.) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Weigel said both meetings will present the same information and that the DOT accepts written and online comments.
There was no council action recorded on either the advisory committee proposal or the DOT meetings; the remarks were delivered as part of alderpersons' reports. Weigel encouraged residents to attend the DOT open houses or submit comments online.
