District sets dust-collection bid schedule, schedules sound panels and plans roof repairs

District staff updated the board on several facilities projects and maintenance issues, including a dust-collection replacement bid, roof repairs at multiple buildings, sound-abatement panel installation at the elementary school and Booster Club plans for two new exterior signs.
Universal Construction prepared bid documents for the school’s dust-collection project; district staff said the packet would be advertised and that bids are due March 3. Universal Construction planned to make a recommendation to the district on March 5 and present for board approval at the March 10 meeting.
Staff described the replacement dust-collection unit as similar in size to the district’s current unit, with a potential need to enlarge the concrete pad and to add a pressure-relief or hatch-safety measure. Facilities staff said the unit will have a pressure-relief system and that the district may later explore fencing to keep a released hatch from discharging into public areas.
On roof maintenance, staff told the board that contractors found detached membrane spots and loose decking at the middle school and other roofs. The estimate discussed for the middle-school repairs was in the neighborhood of $8,500; staff said the roof was not under warranty. District staff described the necessary repairs as reattaching flashing and patching membrane where necessary; they said many repairs can be completed in winter temperatures.
Elementary sound-abatement panels manufactured by School Specialty (Frost) are scheduled to ship about March 10 with installation planned for March 17–20 during spring break. Staff said installers would be on site during the break to minimize instructional disruption.
The Booster Club presented plans to pay for two metal signs at the high school: a backlit 5‑by‑6 foot Red Hawk head and a 30‑inch-by‑12‑foot sign above the main entrance reading “Hiawatha Red Hawks.” Board members indicated general support for the privately funded project.
Board and staff also discussed snow-removal performance from the district’s contractor (Grims); staff noted sidewalk and track-area concerns after the district’s recent heavy snowfall and discussed routing instructions for future plowing. The board asked staff to pursue clearer routing for sidewalks and the First Street crosswalk; staff noted responsibility for First Street clearance may lie with the city or state.
No final votes on the dust-collection bid, pad changes or fencing were taken at the meeting; those items were scheduled for the March agenda.
