City outlines park and facility beautification: hydrant art, memorial wall, benches and school welding participation

City public-works staff and EDC members discussed several beautification projects for city parks and facilities, including installation of eight decorative (multicolored) fire-hydrant features at the Fire Station pavilion, a possible memorial wall on the Walgreens-side frontage, replacement or purchase of concrete benches for Sam Wiley Park, and volunteer/CTE participation from local schools for fabrication and painting.
Roger (Public Works) described proposed placement options for eight hydrant features around the pavilion and along Hansen and San Jacinto frontages, including spacing plans, chain or connector ideas between hydrants, and the possibility of adding bike racks or bollards between hydrants. "One of the options was put hydrants right here... and connect them either with a fire hydrant hose or with a chain," Roger said while showing layout options. He said the hydrants would be painted in multicolor patterns to make them decorative and to avoid confusion with live hydrants.
Roger and the board also discussed a memorial wall on the Walgreens side of the park and the installation of bollards to protect the area. Members said they had discussed bench purchases previously and urged staff to confirm pricing and proceed; one board member said the Rotary expressed interest in participating.
Board members said Cleveland ISD welding and other CTE classes have agreed to assist with fabrication, repair and painting on several city projects, giving students hands-on experience while helping the city complete installations. "We did have a meeting... with CISD, CT welding, instructors... to kind of a little site walk through of the project that we're looking at and asking for their assistance," Roger said. A pastor also offered students for painting and refurbishing tasks at Stansel Park and the arena, with the city supplying paint and materials.
No contracts or purchases were approved at the meeting; board members asked staff to confirm bench pricing and to return with details on layout, procurement and partner commitments.
