"We did submit a grant application by the deadline for Transportation Alternatives," EDC Director of Community Development Emilio Livario said. He said the grant process is two phases and the city is waiting to hear back on phase one.
Board members raised safety concerns for portions of the city where students and pedestrians walk daily. One director noted heavy morning and afternoon pedestrian traffic on the Truman to Southland corridor near the schools and asked whether Safe Routes to School funding might be available for that stretch.
Officials said the cost of completing sidewalk improvements without grants would be prohibitive; Livario and other staff estimated about $4,000,000 for the improvements discussed and said typical grant matches run roughly 10–20 percent. They emphasized that the city relies on grant opportunities to fund such projects.
Livario said staff would check application dates and return with details on grant phase timing, scoring expectations and next steps. No formal action or commitment of city funds was approved during the meeting.
