The board unanimously approved the nomination of Jamie Ramos for the New Mexico School Boards Association 2025 Excellence in Student Achievement award. Vice President Courtney Jackson moved the nomination and Board Member Heather Benavides seconded; the board praised Ramos’s work supporting students experiencing homelessness and her use of the McKinney‑Vento Homeless Assistance Act in coordinating community referrals.
A proposed revision to Board Policy FE (Naming, Renaming, and Dedication of Facilities) was brought to the full board after discussion in the policy committee but the motion failed to carry following debate about whether naming/renaming decisions should remain a board-level decision or be delegated administratively.
The board approved the fiscal year 2026 budget calendar, which was adjusted to reflect an extension from the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED): the district will now submit a board‑approved budget by May 19, 2025. Renette Apodaca, APS chief financial officer, presented the calendar and told the board the administration sought approval after Finance Committee review.
The meeting also included nonbinding discussion items (May 2025 general obligation bond sale and a broader FY26 budget presentation) that the board reserved for additional questions and forthcoming committee meetings.
