Public comment session draws sharp criticism and a separate call for emergency preparedness

A March 4 public comment period at the Dickinson City Commission meeting featured a long statement by a resident that several commissioners and other residents later condemned, and a separate presentation by a resident urging the city to prepare for extreme weather.

The first speaker, identified in the meeting as Ryan Misano, delivered a prolonged statement criticizing immigration and the media, and making broad, derogatory claims about religious and ethnic groups and gender roles. Several commissioners and audience members responded immediately afterward. Commissioner Alderman apologized to city staff and other women present for having to listen to the remarks. Resident Dave Ouellette and other members of the public criticized the speaker for denigrating local women and urged him to take his commentary to other platforms rather than the public meeting. Jenna Redish, a Dickinson resident and business owner, described Dickinson as a safe community where she chooses to raise her family and said she appreciated local public servants and staff.

Separately during public comment, resident David O'Brien raised concerns about extreme winter weather and what he described as a forthcoming "polar vortex" and asked the commission to prioritize emergency planning, food and fuel preparedness, and appropriate rescue equipment rather than higher‑cost ladder trucks. Commissioner Oderman and City Administrator Dossinger said the city participates in tabletop and other emergency exercises with Stark County Emergency Management and noted that some preparedness planning and infrastructure work (for example, Patterson Lake as a potential water source and generator protection) is ongoing.

The commission did not take formal action on statements delivered during public comment, but some commissioners asked staff to pursue additional outreach and coordination with emergency management as appropriate.
