Shelby Street boat-launch docks slated for multi-year replacement, city funding to cover most costs

City staff reported plans to replace docks at the Shelby Street boat launch over the next several years, with the goal of installing more robust floating docks that can remain in the water through the off-season.

"They're looking at replacement of all the docks at Shelby Street Boat Launch over the next couple years," said a city staff member who presented the update and noted meetings with vendors on options. The staff member said the first priority is the docks used for launching boats and the docks used by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Sandusky Fire Department.

Jason Marling, city staff (project contact), was identified as the person to whom additional technical questions could be directed. When asked whether the project would be grant-funded or covered by capital improvements, a staff member said, "The capital plan has a few years worth of funding we had set aside through the Issue 8 money that was available for parks and rec. And then there was also the parking and admission tax funding that was available for parks and rec. So the majority of it will be coming out of city funds."

Board members asked about cost estimates and how replacement docks might affect usage; staff said they did not have specific cost figures available at the meeting and offered to pass detailed cost questions to Jason Marling. The presenter said vendors are being evaluated and the city is prioritizing docks that serve as launch points and emergency-service access.

No bids, contracts or firm schedules were approved at the meeting; staff said the project will be phased and more details will be provided as vendor meetings continue and options are selected.
