Sandusky launches preliminary grant-funded erosion study at Lions Park

Sandusky Boards & Commissions members were briefed on a preliminary, grant-funded study to evaluate erosion at Lions Park and the feasibility of using the old breakwater or other measures to slow wave energy.
"We are getting started, through a grant that was received, to do a study to evaluate the old breakwater that was out there and try to figure out if there's a way that we might be able to utilize that or other measures to control the erosion," Mr. King, board member, said. He said the city will bring a consultant on board and provide years of existing documents for the consultant to review.
The study is in an early phase: staff said they do not yet have a defined scope of work or a schedule for project design. Kyle, staff member, said the community has expressed interest in increased water access and some form of beach, and that officials will keep that public preference in mind while evaluating erosion-control options. A board member asked whether beach enrichment might be possible; staff said that would likely be a separate evaluation and could depend on approvals from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Staff also noted a history of shoreline work in recent years and emphasized the study's aim to reduce undercutting and "under toes" in the near shore. No firm timeline or consultant identity was announced; staff said further steps will include onboarding the consultant and defining a scope of work.
Because the work is currently investigatory, no construction contract or funding commitment for construction was made at the meeting.
