Bill Bennett, representing Guam Amateur Baseball (GABA), told the Mayor’s Council that GABA is a registered Guam nonprofit that runs youth and amateur baseball programs and prevention initiatives. He said discussions with the Department of Parks and Recreation aim to bring adult village baseball back to Paseo Stadium and to use village participation to support youth programs later.
Bennett said DPR entered into an agreement with GABA to organize and officiate games at Paseo Stadium; GABA has run a pilot Liberation Baseball Tournament with six teams and 16 games as a proof of concept. He said the pilot drew support from players, coaches and spectators and that villages benefit from community engagement and youth pipelines.
Mike Soderquist, GABA lead coordinator, asked mayors to recruit coaches and organize teams so villages can field squads for a village baseball league. Bennett said GABA has experience running fields (citing Ookodoo fields as an example) and can provide league rules and organization if mayors assign local coordinators.
The presentation was informational; mayors were asked to help identify coaches and teams. No formal vote by the Mayor’s Council was recorded at the meeting.
