Savannah High student Elizabeth Pilar Hernandez named superintendent’s Student of the Month

Elizabeth Pilar Hernandez, a student at Savannah High School and the Savannah-Chatham County Schools superintendent’s Student of the Month for February, was honored during a school spotlight at a district meeting.

Hernandez was recognized for leadership and academic accomplishments including serving as Savannah High’s FBLA vice president, reaching state finalist status in impromptu speaking, and winning a first-place prize in business competitions run through the 3DE Junior Achievement program. "We learn leadership skills, but I think the most impact it's had on me were friends and found family," Hernandez said.

The district presenter highlighted Hernandez’s broader school activities, saying she has three years in the National Honor Society and three years in the Student Leadership Program. The presenter added that Hernandez moved to Savannah High for law and culinary programs before discovering a "recent interest" in communications and writing. Hernandez told listeners she enjoys writing short stories and poems and is considering a path in communications or journalism. "Public speaking is something I've always had a fear at, but working at it has helped me get better," she said.

During the spotlight, another staff speaker noted Hernandez’s performance in team case studies, saying, "And out of maybe 6 case studies, we won about 5," an approximate count provided in remarks. Ken Slatz closed the segment, saying, "Please help me congratulate Elizabeth Pilar Hernandez, the superintendent student of the month for February," and identifying himself as the meeting's student-spotlight presenter.

The recognition highlights Hernandez’s participation in school leadership and career-related programs and the district’s practice of spotlighting individual students at meetings. No formal board action was taken during the spotlight segment; the item was presented as an informational recognition.
