Lincoln County coaches say Science of Reading, intervention groups producing gains

Dion Lucas and Sarah Dunlap, county reading coaches, updated the Lincoln County Board of Education on Jan. 21 about the district’s Science of Reading work and related interventions tied to House Bill 3035.
Lucas and Dunlap said the district is in its second full year of implementing the Science of Reading. They said countywide intervention grouping is now fully implemented: students are placed in “What I Need” groups at their instructional level and groups are reconfigured about every nine weeks based on phonics surveys and diagnostic data.
The coaches said the district purchased Newsela to support comprehension groups for grades 3–5 and to provide informational texts and formative quizzes aligned to summative-assessment-style questions. They also said the district trained special-education teachers this summer to use Corrective Reading and Reading Mastery, programs the coaches said are producing measurable gains; several students have exited the corrective-reading program and are prepared to re-enter regular classrooms with co-teaching support.
Lucas and Dunlap credited classroom teachers and district support for early improvements shown in the second I-Ready diagnostic window; the coaches noted the diagnostic window closes Jan. 31 and the team will continue to analyze data. They said state-level trainers and the county math coach will conduct principal training sessions to help principals identify appropriate classroom implementation of the Science of Reading and to strengthen school-level coaching.
