District receives construction updates: Davis E. Smith Elementary on schedule, Haltom High renovations advancing, four elementary roofs nearing completion

HKS Architects gave the Birdville ISD board a construction update Feb. 27, reporting that David E. Smith Elementary School is substantially dried-in and on track for an opening this fall, Haltom High School additions and renovations are progressing, and reroofing work is substantially complete at four elementary campuses.
Doug Caney of HKS described the David E. Smith project as nearing completion of major exterior work, with masonry, glazing and roofing in place and interior mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems being installed and commissioned. "The building is dried in, the roofing's complete," Caney said, noting interior finishes and equipment commissioning would continue through spring ahead of an August opening.
At Haltom High, HKS and contractor Lee Lewis reported that the library renovation and main entry are open for student use, canopy steel and roof-metal installations are in place and structural work on the storm shelter and additions is progressing. The team shared drone photos of the reinforced deck and insulated-concrete-form storm shelter walls and said punch-list work is underway in occupied areas.
The board also received a brief status on four elementary-school roofing projects (Academy, Spicer, Northridge and Walker Creek). Administrators said roofing work is substantially complete at all four campuses and final site grading and detailing remain.
What the district said about timelines and next steps
HKS presented a four-week look-ahead for each site that included interior finishes, railings, kitchen equipment commissioning and continued MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) commissioning at David E. Smith; masonry, concrete decking and continued MEP work at Haltom High; and closeout walks and final detailing for the elementary roof projects. The team praised Lee Lewis for construction progress and said they will return to the board with before-and-after courtyard photos for Haltom High on a future agenda.
