Board reviews proposed 2025–26 instructional calendar; Aug. 13 suggested first day for students

District staff presented a proposed 2025–26 instructional calendar at the Jan. 23 meeting. The draft calendar calls for teachers to begin on Aug. 1, 2025, and students to begin on Aug. 13, 2025. The proposed last student day is May 21, 2026, with graduation and a final teacher work day on May 22, 2026. The plan meets the state requirement of 75,600 instructional minutes and 187 teacher contract days; staff said the extra minutes provide flexibility to avoid making up holiday closures because of inclement weather.

Staff described other features intended to align Birdville ISD with neighboring districts and postsecondary partners: periodic professional learning days that do not add contract days, two flex work days for staff, holidays aligned with major breaks and an eye to state assessment schedules that could require future tweak. The calendar includes planned professional development windows such as a Feb. 14 foundational training day for math teachers (see OER discussion) and two banked bad-weather days (including Good Friday).

Trustees asked about parental and teacher concerns, the number of responses from community outreach (staff said over 300 responses were collected and categorized), and whether teachers who have students graduating would be excused without using personal leave; staff said principals generally work to accommodate teachers and would handle individual requests. Trustees thanked the large stakeholder committee for the calendar work; the board will consider the calendar at an upcoming meeting.
