District outlines math OER transition plan; board adopts Texas-developed math materials

District curriculum staff presented a transition plan at the Jan. 23 meeting describing how Birdville ISD will implement the Texas-developed open educational resources (OER) for mathematics and how the district will support teachers, leaders and families during the switch. The plan covers communication, printing, master schedules, stakeholder expectations for an internalization process, and professional learning timelines.
Mari Cruz (curriculum staff) said the state’s new template must be used and that the district has already begun communicating the vision to the board and to campus leaders. Staff emphasized an instructional “internalization” process in which professional learning communities focus not only on student performance data but also on what instruction should look like in classrooms. Cruz said the district will provide early training starting Feb. 14 for math teachers and will offer math academies over the summer for early adopters; full implementation training would continue into the fall.
The board then considered and approved a separate, formal motion to adopt the Texas State-developed curriculum materials (OER) for mathematics from kindergarten through Algebra I. The motion passed unanimously.
