Bothell proclaims March 2025 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month; Alyssa Burnett Center accepts proclamation

Mayor Mason Thompson read a proclamation at the March 4 City Council meeting designating March 2025 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Bothell and encouraging businesses, organizations and city staff to review practices for inclusion.
Representatives from the Alyssa Burnett Adult Life Center accepted the proclamation. Benjamin Moore, a center participant, said “disability rights are human rights” and quoted the movement’s slogan “nothing about us without us.” He urged the community to move beyond awareness to acceptance, saying inclusion improves life quality for people with developmental disabilities and benefits the community.
John Winberg, another member associated with the center, said services were harder to find when the center opened in 2014 and urged continued expansion of opportunities and supports. A center staff member invited council and community members to visit and consider volunteer, apprenticeship and workplace partnerships.
The proclamation notes community organizations that support disability inclusion and encourages local businesses and community groups to actively review accessibility and inclusion practices. The item was ceremonial; no council action was required.
