The Canyon Independent School District Board of Trustees convened a special called meeting at 6:01 p.m. Jan. 27 to hear a Level 3 appeal by Terrell Slocum concerning a Hillside Elementary School classroom teacher, President Jenny Weinburner said.
The hearing was held in closed session under Section 551.074 of the Texas Government Code (personnel matters). Weinburner said the employee who is the subject of the complaint did not request a public hearing. "No action on this matter was taken by the board in closed session," she said after the board reconvened at 7:53 p.m.
Weinburner told those present the board had reviewed the record and the parties' presentations and asked for more time to formulate a response. "We will respond we're reserving our right to respond to you at a later date," she said, adding the board would act "within the guidelines that were permitted prior to our next regularly scheduled board meeting." She also offered an apology to the family for the distress described in the appeal: "We're very, very apologetic for the heartache that I know and I can see you've been through, and we're sorry for that."
No members of the public signed in to speak at the special call meeting, which the board opened at 6:01 p.m. and adjourned at 7:55 p.m. Weinburner recorded that the board entered closed session at 6:03 p.m. and reconvened in open session at 7:53 p.m.
The board did not move or vote on a final disposition during the meeting. Weinburner said the board will consider and issue its response before the next regularly scheduled meeting; the transcript does not specify what form that response will take or the timeline beyond that statement.
The board members listed as present were Jenny Weinburner (presiding officer), Casey Posey, Lori Gilliland, Matt Parker, Katherine Wiegand and Mandy Palmer. The hearing record referenced district policy with the local code cited in the transcript as both "FMG local" and "FNG local."
