During the public-comment portion of the meeting Lisa Ferguson spoke at length about public restrooms being closed in colder months and called attention to poor restroom conditions at several parks, saying closures and poor facilities affect walkers, tourists and daily users. She said maintenance and reopening decisions fall under facilities staff (Tony Sorell and Chris Hale) and noted delays related to water-line work and staffing. Board staff responded that facilities staff would address reopening as soon as possible.
Ferguson and another organizer (Charlie) also updated the board on a fundraising effort through Madtown Pickleball to create a Mary Kay McCubbin memorial and scholarship. They said the group had raised $1,300 and that they would like to run a memorial pickleball tournament in late spring to raise additional funds to create a $500 scholarship in McCubbin—s name. They asked the board not to charge a court rental fee so that fundraising proceeds would reach the target. Parks staff checked availability and responded that there is currently no fee for that court and that organizers should provide a proposal next month with dates, categories and specific plans so staff can schedule and advertise the event.
Board staff also said Brown Memorial Gym is a high-use facility and acknowledged the need for continued advocacy and potential capital investments for its upkeep.
