Cumberland County Board of Education committee members approved several facility-naming requests submitted by individual schools to honor former staff and coaches.
Approved namings included: the Jay Boulder Band Room at Southview High School; Brent Barker Court at Southview High School basketball court; the Leonard Bellamy Gymnasium at Spring Lake Middle School; the Gary Weller Press Box at Pine Forest High School; and the Donnie E. Weeks Football Field at Pine Forest Middle School. The committee heard brief descriptions of each honoree’s service, awards and community impact and approved each naming with a motion and second.
Why it matters: facility namings are symbolic recognitions often requested by school communities to honor long-serving educators and coaches. Board members and speakers recounted honorees’ achievements and personal impact on students when the requests were presented.
Board comments Board members offered personal recollections supporting the namings. One board member recalled the honoree’s role in building large, award-winning bands and said the band room “is covered wall to wall with trophies and awards those kids have won because of his leadership.” For the Brent Barker court, speakers detailed coaching records and a state championship season that supporters said warranted naming the court in his honor.
Board action Committee members moved and seconded each naming request; the committee voted to approve the requests as presented and will forward the items per the board’s procedures.
