Police Chief Phil Watkins told the Jan. 27 work session the department is asking the council to authorize purchase of 15 TASER 7 devices and 90 cartridges from Axon Enterprise Inc.
Watkins said the TASER 7 is a less-lethal weapon that the department uses to help incapacitate individuals while reducing the risk of serious injury or death. He said wear and tear has reduced the department's inventory and the purchase would provide a TASER for every uniformed officer. Watkins also said the purchase includes accessories and a year's supply of cartridges to cover training needs.
The chief said total cost of the equipment and cartridges is $47,845.43 and that funding will come from the FY 2022 Byrne JAG formula grant; no city matching funds are required. Watkins said Axon Enterprises is the sole-source provider of the equipment.
No council vote was recorded during the work session; staff introduced the resolution for later action.
