The city manager updated the commission on the citywide rollout of the Samsara fleet-monitoring system, saying the platform has been installed on most of the city’s fleet and is already active in departments such as Fire.
Mike Knight said Samsara monitors vehicle and operator behavior, including detection of texting while driving and seatbelt usage, and can be applied to vehicles, trailers, mowers and other moving equipment. He said the program began with a pilot of about 100 vehicles last year (solid waste, streets, stormwater and CDL vehicles) and the current phase covers the remainder of rolling stock. The police department remains the last segment to be configured, and Knight said the city is working to build in statutory exemptions and operational protocols appropriate for law enforcement duties.
Knight said the city is educating employees and adjusting the program as it expands, and that the system is being used to improve safety for employees and the public. Commissioners asked about which vehicles are included; Knight confirmed that lawnmowers, street sweepers and other mobile equipment are included in the rollout as part of the broader fleet.
