Parks & Recreation staff reviewed planned programming and capital needs at the Collegedale workshop, detailing an expanded events calendar and several park and greenway improvements under consideration.
Parks director (presentation) said recent program offerings have grown and staff plan new events (silent discos, family dances, a city 5K to fund park improvements and a community mural under Appisson Pike with Sherwin‑Williams assistance). The department noted a need for benches at Thatcher Switch Park, Greenway photo‑op installations and additions to the Imagination Station rebuild schedule as weather permits.
Staff raised operational constraints: limited part‑time hiring availability in the current labor market, difficulties with interns’ limited schedules and the benefit of stronger relationships with local schools (the department wants to expand school partnerships). They also said the parks web presence is fragmented (multiple platforms) and asked whether consolidation with the city website would be supported.
Capital and staffing asks: Parks staff asked the commission to consider funding for park benches, a storage/consolidation of websites and additional staffing where feasible; commissioners suggested creative funding (events, sponsorships) and asked staff to return with cost estimates. No appropriation was approved at the workshop.
Ending: Staff said they will refine cost estimates and return during the budget process with prioritized capital and staffing requests.
