The City Commission on Feb. 12 approved appointing one of its members to chair the city’s audit committee for the purpose of selecting external auditors under a publicly advertised request‑for‑proposals process.
Inspector General Dennis Sutton told the commission that Florida law requires a governing‑body member to chair an external‑auditor selection committee and that the city code designates the audit committee to perform that role. To conform the code with the charter language, staff proposed a limited appointment of a commission member to serve as audit‑committee chair only for the external‑auditor selection process, with the appointment ending upon selection of the external auditor.
Sutton recommended continuing the prior practice and having the mayor pro tem serve in the role during the RFP evaluation, as had been done previously. The commission moved and approved the staff recommendation by voice vote.
