Board amends Chaminade Madonna athletic‑field conditions to allow school events and require parking payment system

The Planning and Development Board on Jan. 14 approved an amendment to the conditions of Resolution 16‑PV‑67 that governs use of Chaminade Madonna College Preparatory School’s athletic field at 500 E. Chaminade Drive. The board replaced language limiting activity to sporting “games” with broader “events” and removed a prior condition that prohibited charging for parking. The approval included a new condition requiring the school to implement a parking payment system to prevent queuing on public rights of way.
Carmen Diaz of the planning department explained the requested change: the earlier 2017 resolution allowed up to 25 games per school year; the school asked to change the wording to allow 25 events per school year (August–May) and to delete the condition that had forbidden charging for parking during games. Diaz said conditions f and g in the resolution would remain unchanged and that staff recommended approval with a new condition for a parking payment system, “including but not limited to mobile applications, prepayment options, or payment on exit.”
Dr. Judith Bujek, head of school at Chaminade Madonna, said the request was prompted by increased attendance at the school’s events, particularly football. “We just won our seventh state championship in football,” Bujek said, and that increased interest has forced the school to use an overflow parking lot at a nearby GFS site and shuttle attendees to campus.
Bujek told the board the school had not charged for parking under the existing resolution but that new costs for shuttles, security and overflow arrangements had created financial pressure. She said the school is not proposing commercial rentals, carnivals or short‑term rentals and that typical use is concentrated in a short football season from mid‑August to November.
In discussion board members sought clarification about what “events” would include and how the payment system would be enforced in ways that would not push parkers into neighborhood streets. Planning staff noted a separate condition already requires police presence for larger events; code enforcement would be available for complaints. The board voted to approve the amendment with the staff‑recommended parking‑payment requirement.
The board’s action allows Chaminade Madonna to host up to 25 school events per school year under the amended resolution, provided the school implements the required parking payment system and continues to meet other resolution conditions.
